A lack in accessible and affordable housing is one of the most significant obstacles people with disabilities face. An accessible home means increased independence and self-sufficiency. One of the most common needs expressed to PACE staff is a need for accessible affordable housing. Economic barriers such as high unemployment rate of people with disabilities, adaptive technology, equipment/medical expenses and discrimination can complicate the situation by limiting financial resources.

People age, and with age comes sometimes slowly creeping disability, a little less sight, a little less sound and/or mobility changes. A home that anticipates these natural life changes can ward off loss of independence as we all age.

A parent of a child with a disability can enhance that child's independence by creating an environment that addresses their individual access needs. The parent is building the child's foundation to know they can develop the ability to control of their environment.

PACE is working to increase awareness, provide information and technical assistance and bring together community entities to provide more housing options for people with disabilities.
